Urban parks bring scenes and specimens from nature and countryside/landscape into towns and cities. By bringing the sound of wind from far away places I wanted the piece to act in a similar way. Wind turbines are usually located in open, natural environments and out of sight of the mostly urban users/consumers of energy. Like traditional windmills, this installation co-locates generation and use. Clusters of wind turbines, often located in the open spaces of nature, have essentially a sculptural character. Their optimal shapes both suggest beauty and brutal functionality. My little wind farm has a much more quirky and playful character.

The New Geometry

The New Geometry (2003–06) is a system of geometry with global scope. It is an in-depth exploration of the notion of the Axis of Evil. The Axis of Evil, of course, was first unveiled in the 2002 State of the Union address, in which G.W. Bush introduced a basic version consisting of Iran, Iraq, and North Korea—countries not only allegedly promoting violence against the United States and harbouring weapons of mass destruction but also falling along a single, straight cartographic line. Later work at the State Department revealed that the line could be extended further West, in fact all the way to Cuba. The discovery was fundamental: The capitals of Cuba, Iraq, Iran, North Korea—and for that matter Syria, as well—form a single line: the Axis of Evil. The New Geometry consists of a series of display plates, school maps, black boards, and a computer presentation illustrating the twenty axioms of The New Geometry.

Eden au Lac (2004) is a mural drawing made only with barcode labels stuck on a sheet of plastic (180x340cm). It can be read with a handheld barcode scanner to display several hundred text fragments and factoids, including animal biographies from the Swiss national cattle movement database, official texts, handbook excerpts, glossaries on herding, writings by alpine cowboys and cowgirls, literary & historic material, and my own texts.
